Look for proof, not promises
Ask for real examples and references. Be skeptical of anyone showcasing inflated numbers without context — results vary by market, and honest agencies say so.
Red flags to walk away from
- “Guaranteed #1 rankings” — no one can promise this
- Long contracts with no clear deliverables
- Vague reporting or vanity metrics only
- They own your website, domain, or ad accounts — you should
- Cookie-cutter strategy with no questions about your business
Questions worth asking
- What will you actually do each month?
- How do you report, and on what metrics?
- Do I own all assets and accounts?
- Who does the work — and can I talk to them?
- What happens if it isn’t working?
Make sure you own everything
Your website, domain, Google Business Profile, and ad accounts should be in your name. A good partner builds your assets — not theirs.
Tie the relationship to outcomes
The best agencies report on booked leads and revenue, set realistic expectations, and are comfortable being measured. Confidence is good; exaggeration is a warning sign.
