How to Choose a Marketing Agency (Without Getting Burned)

A practical checklist for picking a marketing partner — including the red flags that should make you walk away.

Look for proof, not promises

Ask for real examples and references. Be skeptical of anyone showcasing inflated numbers without context — results vary by market, and honest agencies say so.

Red flags to walk away from

  • “Guaranteed #1 rankings” — no one can promise this
  • Long contracts with no clear deliverables
  • Vague reporting or vanity metrics only
  • They own your website, domain, or ad accounts — you should
  • Cookie-cutter strategy with no questions about your business

Questions worth asking

  • What will you actually do each month?
  • How do you report, and on what metrics?
  • Do I own all assets and accounts?
  • Who does the work — and can I talk to them?
  • What happens if it isn’t working?

Make sure you own everything

Your website, domain, Google Business Profile, and ad accounts should be in your name. A good partner builds your assets — not theirs.

Tie the relationship to outcomes

The best agencies report on booked leads and revenue, set realistic expectations, and are comfortable being measured. Confidence is good; exaggeration is a warning sign.
