Alameda County, California

Marketing for Berkeley businesses

A city with at least four distinct shopping districts, a major university, a research and biotech base in the west, and a market where the district name matters far more than the city name.

Platforms this work keeps in sync: Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp, Nextdoor, Foursquare, Tripadvisor and Better Business Bureau.

In short

Which Berkeley district is a business actually competing in?

Berkeley has several distinct commercial districts, including downtown around Shattuck Avenue, the Fourth Street shopping district in the west, Telegraph Avenue by the university and Solano Avenue in the north.

Each draws a different customer from a different direction, so the district name carries far more useful intent than the city name for most businesses.

VIS Mountain serves Berkeley from its San Francisco office at 580 California Street. There is no VIS Mountain address in Berkeley.

The ground

Four districts between the bay and the hills.

Berkeley sits in Alameda County on the east side of San Francisco Bay, with Oakland to the south, Albany to the north, the Berkeley Hills to the east and the bay shoreline to the west. Interstate 80 runs along the waterfront and Ashby Avenue and University Avenue cross the city east to west.

Downtown Berkeley surrounds Shattuck Avenue, with the Downtown Berkeley BART station at its centre and the university campus immediately east. The Shattuck Avenue stretch north of the campus is the district long known as the Gourmet Ghetto for its concentration of food businesses.

Fourth Street in west Berkeley is a separate shopping district, Telegraph Avenue runs south from the campus as a student-oriented commercial street, and Solano Avenue in the north forms a fourth district shared with Albany. The west of the city carries an industrial and research base. From our San Francisco office the run across the Bay Bridge and north is direct.

Who trades here

University, research and biotech, independent retail and a serious food economy.

The University of California, Berkeley is the dominant institution and it generates a very large economy: student services, food and coffee, bookshops and printing, housing-adjacent services, fitness and healthcare, all moving with the academic calendar.

West Berkeley carries a research, biotech and light industrial base, alongside makers, workshops and design businesses in the older industrial buildings. These sell nationally and use local search mainly for recruitment and credibility.

Food and drink is a genuinely notable Berkeley economy, concentrated around north Shattuck and spread across the districts, alongside independent bookshops, retail, personal services and a substantial professional and healthcare base serving the city and the surrounding East Bay.

Consistency

One record, quoted in a hundred places.

The academic calendar moves demand sharply in several categories and the dates are published well in advance.

One business record, repeated everywhereA single record card holding the business name, address, phone and hours, with lines fanning out to seven places that repeat those details: map profiles, search engines, social profiles, AI assistants, directories, voice assistants and review sites.ONE SOURCE RECORDEVERYWHERE THAT REPEATS ITYOUR BUSINESS RECORDNAMEADDRESSPHONEHOURSMAP PROFILESEARCH ENGINESOCIAL PROFILEAI ASSISTANTDIRECTORIESVOICE ASSISTANTREVIEW SITESWHEN ONE COPY DISAGREES, EVERY COPY DOWNSTREAM INHERITS THE ERROR.
A single business record syndicating out to maps, directories, data aggregators and assistants.

Your address exists in far more places than you put it. Map platforms, directories, data aggregators, industry listings and now AI assistants all hold a copy, and most of them got it second hand.

When a business in Berkeley moves suite, changes a phone number or rebrands, the old version keeps circulating. Nobody reports it because nothing looks broken. It just quietly costs you the searches where the wrong record wins.

The fix is unglamorous: find every copy, correct the ones that can be corrected, and suppress the duplicates. Done once properly it stays fixed for years.

Evidence

Reviews are read before anything else you publish.

BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, based on 1,002 US adults, is vendor research with a stated method. These four rows drive most of what a review programme should do.

97%read online reviews for local businesses
47%will not use a business with fewer than 20 reviews
74%prioritise reviews from the last three months
89%expect a business to respond to their review

Recency is the part most Berkeley businesses get wrong. A strong profile that stopped collecting reviews two years ago reads as a business that may not still be trading.

Search behaviour

District-level intent, and a calendar that moves demand.

Searchers here use district names. Fourth Street, Telegraph, Solano and downtown all carry specific intent and much less competition than the city name, and a business that names its district accurately in content and profile description is doing something most competitors have not.

The academic calendar is the other factor. Term dates, move-in and graduation move demand sharply in food, housing-adjacent services, printing, fitness and some healthcare. For businesses near the campus that is a plannable, published pattern rather than a surprise.

West Berkeley is a research and industrial district whose businesses need an entirely different plan from the retail streets.

Craft

How we build a page for a place like Berkeley.

Location pages have a bad reputation because most of them are one page copied a hundred times. District names here carry far more intent than the city name, and most competitors still target the city. Here is the standard we hold ourselves to instead.

  1. Name real things

Corridors, districts, the roads people actually use, the kinds of business that genuinely operate there. If we cannot confirm a detail, we write around it rather than invent one.

  2. Answer the question the page exists for

Near the top, in plain sentences, so that a person skimming and an answer engine quoting get the same thing. No preamble and no marketing framing.

  3. Say who serves it and from where

A service area is not an address. We name the office the work runs from and never imply a presence that does not exist.

  4. Link it into the rest of the site

Up to the office it belongs to, across to neighbouring areas, and down to the services being described. A page with no inbound links is a page nobody finds.

Applied once, that is just care. Applied across every area a business serves, it is the difference between a site that ranks locally and a site that looks like it is trying to.

Reporting

What you actually see each month.

Reporting should be short enough to read and specific enough to argue with. This is what a month looks like for a client in Berkeley.

  1. Enquiries, by source

Calls separated between the Google Business Profile and the website, forms tied to the page that produced them, chat conversations that turned into enquiries, and spam excluded so the number is real.

  2. Grid position, not a single rank

Where you hold the map pack across the trading area and where you fall out of it, as a map rather than a number. A single rank figure is an average of results nobody experienced.

  3. What changed and why

The specific work done, in plain language, and what it was meant to move. If something did not move, that is in the report too, along with what we think the reason is.

  4. What we recommend stopping

Anything that is not producing. It is the section most agencies leave out and the one that makes the rest of the report credible.

You own everything: the profile, the site, the tracking, the ad accounts and the data. If you leave, none of it comes with us.

Served from

Who covers Berkeley, and how.

Berkeley is a service area, not an office location. The work is run from the VIS Mountain San Francisco office, which is the nearest of our seven, and there is no VIS Mountain address in Berkeley. Every page on this site that shows a street address shows an office we actually have.

  • The San Francisco office runs the work, and its team is who you would deal with
  • Direct line for that office: (424) 246-9766
  • Support and service are available 24 hours virtually, which is what our published availability describes
  • In-person meetings run 8:00am to 6:00pm local time, by appointment
  • Most first conversations happen on a call or on video, and you are welcome to meet at the office instead
  • Nothing needs signing at a first meeting, and you keep the findings either way

Every office is by appointment only, including the headquarters. We do not take walk-ins. We also do not publish a promised booking turnaround, because the calendar shows real availability and a written promise would go stale the week after we made it.

A local audit, before anything is quoted.

Profile, records, map pack position across Berkeley, site, tracking and what assistants currently say. You get the findings whether or not you work with us. Every office is by appointment only, so pick a time that suits you.

Questions

Straight answers.

Does VIS Mountain have an office in Berkeley?

No. Our Bay Area office is at 580 California Street, Suite 1200, San Francisco. We serve Berkeley from there, by appointment only.

Should we target our district or the city?

The district first, because Fourth Street, Telegraph, Solano and downtown all carry specific intent and far less competition.

The city name is worth holding as a secondary term but on its own it is very broad.

How much does the university calendar matter?

For food, housing-adjacent services, printing, fitness and some healthcare, considerably. For a plumbing company, not at all.

Being clear about which you are stops a lot of wasted effort.

We are a biotech company in west Berkeley. Is local SEO relevant?

Barely, for customer acquisition, and we will say so. Your buyers and partners are national.

It matters for recruitment and for being accurately described when someone or an assistant looks you up, which is a much smaller scope.

What would you check first for a Berkeley retailer?

Which district you are in, then the profile, primary category, duplicates, and grid ranking across the city.

In a city with four separate districts, a single rank number tells you almost nothing useful.
