Home services / Garage doors
Garage door marketing in the category Google verifies hardest.
Garage door services occupy an unusual position. It is one of only two business categories that Google subjects to advanced verification, which includes public records checks and a video interview. That is a barrier, and for a legitimate business it is an advantage.

Why does Google verify garage door advertisers so strictly?
Google requires advanced verification for garage door services in the United States and locksmith services in the United States and Canada. It is a stricter process than ordinary advertiser verification, including an account review, checks against public records including professional licences, and a video interview.
The reason is that both categories attracted persistent fraudulent advertising by operators who quoted a low price, arrived, and charged a great deal more once the customer had no alternative.
For a legitimate business that clears verification, the barrier is a competitive asset: the advertisers who cannot pass are excluded from the placement entirely.
Advanced verification is the defining feature of this category.

It applies to garage door services in the United States and to locksmith services in the United States and Canada, and to no other business category. That is worth saying plainly, because it tells a legitimate operator something useful about the environment they advertise in.

Local Services Ads are not a normal ad buy. Google requires businesses to complete background checks and to hold appropriate licences and insurance before ads can run, verifies licences against state databases, and requires a certificate of insurance where the category calls for one. Background checks reach service professionals as well as owners in urgent categories such as electrical, HVAC, plumbing, locksmith and garage doors.
Garage doors also sit among the urgent Local Services categories where screening extends to background checks on service professionals rather than owners alone, so the people attending a property are checked as well as the business.
The practical implication is that setting up advertising in this category takes longer than in almost any other trade, and it cannot be rushed. A business planning a campaign should begin verification well before it intends to spend anything.
The strategic implication is more encouraging. Once cleared, a business is competing in a placement that a great many low quality advertisers cannot enter at all.
Repair, opener and full replacement behave differently.
They share a van and nothing else, and mixing them into one campaign hides which is working.
| Item | Emergency repair | Opener replacement | Full door replacement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Urgency | Hours, the car is stuck | Days | Weeks |
| Decision basis | Availability and price | Price and features | Appearance, insulation, price |
| Ticket | Low | Moderate | High |
| Where they search | Maps, on a phone | Search | Search and visual browsing |
| Best channel | Local Services Ads, map pack | Search | Search plus visual content |
| Website role | Minimal | Moderate | Significant |
A broken spring is the most common emergency and the one with the worst reputation, because it is exactly where the fraudulent operators concentrated. A legitimate business quoting spring replacement honestly and clearly is answering a fear the customer already has.
Publish spring and repair pricing, because the fraud was about price.
This category's reputation problem is specifically about a quoted price bearing no relation to the invoice.
The pattern consumers were warned about is simple: an advertisement quotes a very low service figure, a technician arrives, diagnoses something expensive, and the customer with a car trapped in a garage agrees because the alternative is worse.
Every legitimate garage door business is competing against the memory of that, and the counter is transparency. Publishing an honest range for the common jobs, particularly spring replacement, opener replacement and cable repair, removes the fear that created the caution.

Be specific about what the service call covers and whether it is credited against the work. Vagueness about the call out fee is the single most recognisable feature of the operators the category is known for.
Also explain what changes the price: door size and weight, single or double spring, opener type and horsepower, and whether other components have failed. A customer who understands the variables treats a higher figure as information rather than as a trap.
This is one of the clearest cases in home services where transparency is a competitive strategy rather than a concession, because the competitor who cannot publish honest pricing is the one the category's reputation is built on. Results vary by market, budget, competition and other factors. Nothing here is a guarantee of a ranking, a lead volume or a revenue outcome.
Winning the call when a car is trapped.
Emergency garage door work is decided as quickly as plumbing and on much the same basis.
Be visible where the search happens
A maps result on a phone, with accurate hours and a service area that matches where a van will actually go. Most of these customers never reach a website.
Answer
The same rule as every emergency trade. A missed call is a job that went to the next result, and it does not appear in any advertising report.
Give a real arrival window
Whatever you say is a representation. A dispatcher promising ninety minutes to secure a booking produces the most common bad review in this trade.

Quote before you work
Obvious operationally and worth stating publicly, because it is the reassurance this category's customers are specifically looking for.
Offer a safe interim option
Where a same day attendance is impossible, telling somebody how to secure the door safely until you arrive is genuinely useful and is remembered.
None of this requires marketing budget. All of it changes the proportion of paid calls that become paid jobs.
What a wary customer checks in ten seconds.

Reviews mentioning that the final price matched the quote do specific work in this category, because that is exactly the fear. Ask customers to describe the pricing experience. The FTC's rule on fake reviews and testimonials took effect on 21 October 2024. It covers buying reviews, writing your own, and suppressing negative ones. Every review we help collect is first party, requested from a real customer, and never gated on the rating they intend to leave.
Full door replacement is a kerb appeal purchase.
A garage door is frequently the largest single visual element on the front of a house, which makes replacement partly an appearance decision rather than a functional one. That puts it closer to a front door or a window project than to a repair call.
It is also the highest value work most garage door businesses do, and it is usually marketed as a line on a services page beneath the repair content.

What it needs is its own treatment: photography of installed doors on local houses, an explanation of styles and materials, insulation and what it actually affects, and an honest price range by specification. Homeowners browse this visually and compare across weeks.
The bridge from repair to replacement is worth building deliberately. A technician attending a failed opener on a twenty year old door is meeting a customer who will replace it within a few years, and a business with any follow up process at all will get that work without paying to acquire the customer twice.
Most garage door companies do no follow up at all after a repair, which means they buy the same household as a new lead when the door finally fails.
What applies to garage door advertising.
- Advanced verification is a stricter check that currently applies to garage door services in the United States and locksmith services in the United States and Canada. It includes an account review, checks against public records including professional licences, and a video interview.
- Local Services Ads are not a normal ad buy. Background checks reach service professionals as well as owners in urgent categories such as electrical, HVAC, plumbing, locksmith and garage doors.
- Google has replaced the separate Local Services badges with a single Google Verified badge, earned by completing the same screening and verification process, and is discontinuing the money back guarantee that went with the Google Guarantee badge. Google's own page now limits reimbursement to services booked before 7 December 2025 and claimed within 30 days of the service being completed. Copy that still promises a Google Guarantee is describing something that no longer exists.
- The FTC's rule on fake reviews and testimonials took effect on 21 October 2024. It covers buying reviews, writing your own, and suppressing negative ones. Every review we help collect is first party, requested from a real customer, and never gated on the rating they intend to leave.
- Any material connection between you and someone endorsing you has to be disclosed clearly and close to the endorsement. Paying, gifting, discounting or employing someone all count as material connections.
Advertising a service price that bears no relation to the usual invoice is a deceptive practice, not merely a sharp tactic. The FTC's general requirement applies: an advertiser needs a reasonable basis for a claim before it runs, and that includes a price.
Jobs by type and average ticket, not call volume.
Call volume is the vanity metric here and it is inflated by price shoppers, wrong numbers and enquiries the business cannot serve.
The panel that describes the business is jobs completed by type, average ticket by type, answer rate and the proportion of repair customers who later return for a replacement. That last one is the growth number and almost nobody tracks it.
Average ticket is worth watching closely in this category because it is also a reputation signal. A business whose average ticket drifts sharply upward relative to its quoted pricing is heading for the reviews the category is known for, whatever the operational justification.
Cost per completed job rather than per lead is the figure to manage the budget to, particularly in a category where Local Services Ads charge per lead and some of those leads will be outside the service area or outside the scope.
What a garage door job is worth, and how to tell the account is weak.
LocalIQ's 2026 benchmarks put home and home improvement at an $8.33 average cost per click and a $90.92 average cost per lead. Those are vendor aggregates across every trade in the sector and they vary enormously inside it, so treat them as a way of spotting a quote that is out of range rather than as a target.
Garage doors span a spring repair and a full replacement, which differ by an order of magnitude. Cost per completed job by type is the measure, and in a pay per lead format it matters more than usual because some leads will be outside the service area or the scope.

Define qualified by job type, door type, property access and geography. An enquiry for a door you do not service, or a property outside the route, is a charged lead that produces nothing.
The compliance point is the strictest on this hub. Advanced verification applies to garage door services in the United States, covering an account review, checks against public records including professional licences, and a video interview. It cannot be rushed and it should be started before any budget is committed.
How you tell it is being done badly: an advertised service price that bears no relation to the usual invoice, no published spring or opener pricing, replacement work buried beneath repair content, and no follow up to repair customers whose door is clearly near the end.

Your website works alongside the field service software you already run.
We do not replace your field service software, we do not migrate it, and we do not ask you to change it. The site links to it from the places a homeowner is ready to act, and embeds the vendor's own widget where the vendor publishes one. Being plain about the mechanism: that is all it is. Nothing is synced, nothing we build reads or writes your records, and the names below are systems our clients run, not partners of ours. A door that will not open is an emergency and a new door is a purchase. The site should establish which in the first tap, because the two callers want opposite things.
Scheduling, dispatch and invoicing
Your jobs, your techs and your invoicing stay in the system your office already runs on. Where it publishes a booking page or an online payment link, the site points at it, and where it does not the phone stays the primary route rather than being demoted for the sake of a widget.

Trade specific systems
Roofing, landscaping and pest control tend to run something built for the trade rather than a general platform, and those often publish nothing a website can embed at all. That is normal and it is not a problem: the handoff is a clearly labelled link and a phone number that rings.

Estimating, measurement and job photos
These sit between the enquiry and the quote, which is exactly where most home services enquiries go cold. We do not touch the tools. What the site can do is set the expectation properly, so a homeowner knows whether they are booking a visit or asking for a measurement.

What we actually change
Not the system: the path to it. Where the button sits on the page, whether it says what happens when you press it, how many taps it takes from a phone, whether it appears again at the point a homeowner has finished reading and decided, and whether somebody who is not ready yet has a second way to reach you. That path is ours, it is measurable, and in most business audits it is the part doing the damage.
Where the handoff is only a link
Some vendors publish an embeddable widget and some publish nothing at all. Where there is nothing to embed and no deep link worth pointing at, the site sends the visitor to your booking page or your login and stops there. That is a perfectly good outcome and we would rather say so than describe a seam we cannot remove. What we can do is make the destination unsurprising, so nobody arrives wondering whether they are still dealing with you.

We look at your verification status, your published pricing and whether your replacement work is visible anywhere beneath the repair content.
One caveat on all of that. These are descriptions of rules as they are published today, not legal advice about your situation. They differ by state and they change, sometimes quietly, so check the current wording with your own counsel or compliance officer before you rely on any of it. Where a rule touches your marketing we write to the stricter reading and send it to you for sign off before anything publishes.
Straight answers.
Why does Google make garage door advertisers jump through extra hoops?
Because garage doors and locksmiths are the two categories subject to advanced verification, which includes an account review, checks against public records including professional licences, and a video interview.
Both categories attracted persistent fraudulent advertising built on quoting a low price and charging far more on arrival. For a legitimate business, the barrier keeps competitors out.
How long does verification take?
Longer than a normal advertising setup, and it cannot be accelerated. Begin it well before you intend to spend anything.
Garage doors also sit among the urgent Local Services categories where background checks extend to service professionals as well as owners, which adds further time.
Should we publish repair prices?
In this category more than almost any other. The reputation problem is specifically about a quoted price bearing no relation to the invoice, and honest ranges remove the fear that created the caution.
Be explicit about the service call fee and whether it is credited, because vagueness there is the most recognisable feature of the operators the category is known for.
How do we get more full door replacements?
Give it its own treatment rather than a line beneath the repair content. Photography of installed doors on local houses, styles and materials explained, and an honest range by specification.
Then build the bridge from repair. A technician attending an old door is meeting a future replacement customer, and almost no business in this trade follows up.
What should we measure?
Jobs completed by type, average ticket by type, answer rate and the proportion of repair customers who return for replacement.
Cost per completed job rather than per lead, particularly where Local Services Ads charge per lead and some leads will fall outside the service area or scope.
Do we still get the Google Guarantee badge?
No. That badge and its money back guarantee were discontinued on 20 October 2025 and replaced by a single Google Verified badge earned through the same screening process.
Marketing material still promising the old badge should be corrected, because in a category this focused on trust the inconsistency is noticed.
