San Francisco County, California
Marketing for Richmond District businesses
A large residential district on the north-west side of the city with three long commercial streets, a deeply multilingual business base, and a name that gets confused with a city across the bay.

What is the biggest opportunity for a Richmond District business?
The clearest opportunity for many Richmond District businesses is publishing in the language their customers actually search in, because a large share of trade along Clement Street and Geary Boulevard happens in Chinese and Russian alongside English.
The second is simply claiming and completing the Google Business Profile, because a meaningful share of long-established businesses here have never done it.
VIS Mountain serves the Richmond District from its San Francisco office at 580 California Street in the Financial District.
Independent restaurants and retail, healthcare and a very multilingual base.
Clement Street carries a dense concentration of independent restaurants, bakeries, markets and shops, with a very substantial Chinese business presence and a long-established reputation as a food street. It draws customers from across the city as well as from the district.
Geary Boulevard is the wider, faster corridor: restaurants, groceries, pharmacies, automotive service, medical and dental practices, banking and a mix of independent and chain retail. It carries a significant Russian-speaking business presence alongside Chinese and English trade.
Balboa Street forms a quieter third strip with neighbourhood restaurants, cafes and services. Across the district sit healthcare practices, home services, childcare and the everyday categories serving a large and settled residential population.
Three long streets between the park and the presidio.
The Richmond District occupies the north-west of San Francisco, between Golden Gate Park to the south, the Presidio to the north, Ocean Beach to the west and Presidio Heights and Laurel Heights to the east. It is usually described as Inner Richmond and Outer Richmond, split roughly around Park Presidio Boulevard.
Clement Street, Geary Boulevard and Balboa Street run east to west as the three commercial spines. Park Presidio Boulevard runs north to south through the district as the approach to the Golden Gate Bridge.
The district is flat, gridded and frequently foggy, and it is genuinely walkable along all three commercial streets. From our Financial District office at 580 California Street the Geary bus or the drive west is direct.
A review process that survives a busy week.
Most review programmes die because they depend on someone remembering. A meaningful share of long-established businesses here have never claimed a profile at all. This is what we set up instead.
Pick the moment, not the month
The ask goes out when the job is finished and the customer is still thinking about it, triggered by something that already happens in your system rather than by a person with a spare minute.
Ask once, make it one tap
A single message with a direct link to the profile. Every extra step between the ask and the review loses a meaningful share of the people who intended to leave one.
Reply to all of them
Including the good ones. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 89% of consumers expect a response and half view generic, templated replies negatively, so the reply has to be written by someone who read the review.
Handle the bad one properly
Respond calmly, correct the record, move the argument off the platform. Nothing published, nothing incentivised, nothing filtered before it is asked for.
That is deliberately boring. Review programmes that are interesting are usually the ones that get a profile suspended.
Richmond District ground worth naming.
Three commercial streets, two halves and two green boundaries.
- Clement Street, the independent food and retail spine
- Geary Boulevard, the wider commercial corridor
- Balboa Street, the quieter third strip
- Park Presidio Boulevard, splitting Inner from Outer Richmond
- Golden Gate Park along the southern boundary
- The Presidio along the northern boundary
- Ocean Beach at the western end
What we check before we quote anything.
We do not price a local programme from a phone call. This is the list we work through first, for any business in the Richmond District. Chinese and Russian language search demand is substantial here and very few competitors publish in either.
- Whether the Google Business Profile is verified, and whether the primary category is the right one
- Whether a duplicate or a suspended profile is quietly splitting the signal
- Whether name, address and phone match across the major directory records
- Where the business currently sits in the map pack across a grid of points, not a single average
- Whether the site has a real page for each service the business actually sells
See the full checklist: What we check before we quote anything.Hide the full checklist: What we check before we quote anything.
- Whether the site loads and works on a phone, which is where most local searches happen
- Whether calls and form fills are tracked to a source, or arriving anonymously
- Review count, review velocity and how recently anyone replied to one
- Whether the business appears at all when an AI assistant is asked the obvious question
Most of that is visible from the outside, which means we can do it before you commit to anything and tell you if the answer is that you do not need us.
Language, then the street, then the name confusion.
Publishing only in English here makes a business invisible to a large part of its own market. Categories, profile description, services list, site content and review responses should work in the language customers actually search in, and on Clement Street and Geary Boulevard that is frequently Chinese or Russian rather than English.
The Richmond name is also genuinely confusing. Searches and directory records mix this district with the city of Richmond across the bay, and being explicit about San Francisco in every record removes the part of that problem you can control.
The Richmond name is shared with a city across the bay, which confuses both searches and directory records.
Which ranking factors practitioners score highest.
Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors study asked 47 local search practitioners to score 187 factors. These are the top four by score, and the second one is the reason location strategy matters at all.
SourceWhitespark, Local Search Ranking Factors, 2026
Two honest notes. Proximity is the only one of these nobody can buy, which is why a business in the Richmond District cannot simply out-spend a nearer competitor. And keyword stuffing a business title, despite scoring third, breaks Google's representation guidelines and risks suspension. We do not do it.
What you actually see each month.
Reporting should be short enough to read and specific enough to argue with. This is what a month looks like for a client in the Richmond District.
Enquiries, by source
Calls separated between the Google Business Profile and the website, forms tied to the page that produced them, chat conversations that turned into enquiries, and spam excluded so the number is real.
Grid position, not a single rank
Where you hold the map pack across the trading area and where you fall out of it, as a map rather than a number. A single rank figure is an average of results nobody experienced.
What changed and why
The specific work done, in plain language, and what it was meant to move. If something did not move, that is in the report too, along with what we think the reason is.
What we recommend stopping
Anything that is not producing. It is the section most agencies leave out and the one that makes the rest of the report credible.
You own everything: the profile, the site, the tracking, the ad accounts and the data. If you leave, none of it comes with us.
What is fixed about the Richmond District.
Geography and commercial structure.
Who covers the Richmond District, and how.
the Richmond District is a service area, not an office location. The work is run from the VIS Mountain San Francisco office, which is the nearest of our seven, and there is no VIS Mountain address in the Richmond District. Every page on this site that shows a street address shows an office we actually have.
- The San Francisco office runs the work, and its team is who you would deal with
- Direct line for that office: (424) 246-9766
- Support and service are available 24 hours virtually, which is what our published availability describes
- In-person meetings run 8:00am to 6:00pm local time, by appointment
- Most first conversations happen on a call or on video, and you are welcome to meet at the office instead
- Nothing needs signing at a first meeting, and you keep the findings either way
Every office is by appointment only, including the headquarters. We do not take walk-ins. We also do not publish a promised booking turnaround, because the calendar shows real availability and a written promise would go stale the week after we made it.

We will run the checks above and walk you through what we find, including the parts that are already fine. Run from the San Francisco office, on a call, with nothing to sign. In-person meetings are available by appointment.
Straight answers.
Where is the nearest VIS Mountain office?
Our Bay Area office is at 580 California Street, Suite 1200, in the Financial District, a direct run east. Meetings are by appointment only.
Should our profile and site be in another language?
If a meaningful share of your customers search in Chinese or Russian, yes, with real translated content rather than a browser widget.
Reviews should be answered in the language they were written in, by someone who actually read them.
How do we stop being confused with Richmond across the bay?
Be explicit about San Francisco in your records, your page content and your structured data.
It will not fix every confused search, but it removes the part you control and it is worth doing once.
Should we say Inner Richmond or Outer Richmond?
Whichever is accurate. Residents use both and they are meaningfully different in terms of catchment and character.
Using the wrong one will read as an outsider's mistake to anyone who lives there.
We have traded here for decades without a listing. Does it matter?
Yes. An unclaimed profile means you cannot set the category, the hours, the services or the photographs, or respond to reviews.
Claiming it is free and it is usually the single highest-value hour spent on any of this.
