San Francisco County, California
Marketing for SoMa businesses
A very large district south of Market Street containing a convention centre, a ballpark, a transit terminal and several sub-districts that have almost nothing in common with each other.

Why can SoMa not be treated as one market?
SoMa covers a large area south of Market Street and contains several distinct sub-districts, including Yerba Buena around the convention centre and museums, Mission Bay to the south, Rincon Hill and the area around the Transbay Terminal, and the blocks near the ballpark.
Each has a different mix of offices, residents, visitors and event traffic, so a single SoMa strategy fits none of them well.
VIS Mountain serves SoMa from its San Francisco office at 580 California Street, immediately north across Market Street.
A large district with several distinct parts.
SoMa, meaning south of Market, runs from Market Street south and east across a large part of central San Francisco, bordered by the Financial District to the north, the Mission to the south-west, Potrero Hill to the south and the bay to the east.
Yerba Buena, around Moscone Center and the museums, occupies the northern part. The Transbay Terminal and the towers around it anchor the north-eastern corner, with Rincon Hill below. Oracle Park and the Mission Bay district sit to the south, along with the UCSF Mission Bay campus.
Fourth and King is the northern terminus of Caltrain. Muni Metro runs beneath Market and out through the district. From our Financial District office at 580 California Street the walk south across Market Street is short.
What actually decides the three results in the map.
Google says it ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. Those three words hide a lot of detail, and in SoMa they pull in different directions. Sub-district names here carry far more intent than SoMa does, and most competitors still use the broad term.
Relevance: does the profile say what you do
Primary category does most of the work, and secondary categories do the rest. A profile filed under the wrong primary category can belong to the best business in the area and still never appear for the search that matters.
Distance: where the searcher is standing
Distance is measured from the person searching, not from the centre of SoMa. That is why one business can hold the map pack on one side of a commercial strip and lose it on the other.
Prominence: how known the business is elsewhere
Reviews, mentions, links, directory records and the site itself all feed prominence. It is the only one of the three you can change quickly by doing more work.
The site behind the profile
A profile with no page behind it competes with one hand tied. The page is where the categories, the area served and the actual services get explained in language a search engine and a person can both read.
Nothing in that list is a trick. It is four pieces of housekeeping that most businesses do once, badly, and then leave alone for years.
Technology offices, conventions, events, research and residents.
Technology and professional offices occupy much of the district's floor space, with artificial intelligence companies accounting for a growing share of recent leasing across downtown San Francisco. Around them sit the co-working, meeting and business service categories that follow office density.
Conventions and events generate substantial and highly concentrated demand: Moscone Center, the museums around Yerba Buena and the ballpark all produce sharp peaks in hospitality, food and transport, with published calendars.
Mission Bay carries a large research and healthcare presence around the UCSF campus, with associated biotech and life science tenants. Residential density has grown substantially across Rincon Hill and Mission Bay, bringing everyday service categories into a district that historically had few.
What is fixed about SoMa.
Geography, transit and structure.
Sub-district first, then the calendar.
Yerba Buena, Mission Bay and Rincon Hill are all names people use, and they carry far more specific intent than SoMa does. A business that names its sub-district accurately is describing where it actually is, which is both more useful to a customer and less competitive as a search term.
The event calendars then drive a large part of the demand. Convention, museum and ballpark schedules are published in advance, and for food, drink and transport businesses, preparing hours and information ahead of those peaks is worth far more than anything published afterwards.
Residential density has grown enough that everyday service categories now compete here in a way they did not before.
What you actually see each month.
Reporting should be short enough to read and specific enough to argue with. This is what a month looks like for a client in SoMa.
Enquiries, by source
Calls separated between the Google Business Profile and the website, forms tied to the page that produced them, chat conversations that turned into enquiries, and spam excluded so the number is real.
Grid position, not a single rank
Where you hold the map pack across the trading area and where you fall out of it, as a map rather than a number. A single rank figure is an average of results nobody experienced.
What changed and why
The specific work done, in plain language, and what it was meant to move. If something did not move, that is in the report too, along with what we think the reason is.
What we recommend stopping
Anything that is not producing. It is the section most agencies leave out and the one that makes the rest of the report credible.
You own everything: the profile, the site, the tracking, the ad accounts and the data. If you leave, none of it comes with us.
What an AI Overview does to the click.
Ahrefs compared 300,000 keywords, half with AI Overviews and half without, using aggregated Search Console data from December 2023 against December 2025. This is the measured drop in click-through rate by position when an AI Overview is present.

That is a vendor study, and it measures correlation across a large sample rather than what will happen to any one site in SoMa. The practical reading is that ranking first is worth less than it was, and being the source the summary quotes is worth more.

Three places people look, and they do not behave the same.
Search is no longer one result page. Convention, museum and ballpark calendars are published in advance, which makes the biggest demand peaks plannable. These three surfaces reward different things, which is why a business can own one and be invisible on the others.
| Item | Map pack | Organic results | AI answers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driven by proximity to the searcher | Heavily | Somewhat | Somewhat |
| Google Business Profile decides eligibility | Yes | No | Often |
| Depth of content on your own site matters | Indirectly | Directly | Directly |
| Reviews affect what is shown | Strongly | Weakly | Often quoted |
| Third-party lists and directories can outrank you | Rarely | Frequently | Frequently |
| A clear, quotable answer on the page helps | No | Yes | Substantially |
We work all three because the same business gets found three different ways, and the cheapest wins are usually on the surface nobody has looked at.
Who covers SoMa, and how.
SoMa is a service area, not an office location. The work is run from the VIS Mountain San Francisco office, which is the nearest of our seven, and there is no VIS Mountain address in SoMa. Every page on this site that shows a street address shows an office we actually have.
- The San Francisco office runs the work, and its team is who you would deal with
- Direct line for that office: (424) 246-9766
- Support and service are available 24 hours virtually, which is what our published availability describes
- In-person meetings run 8:00am to 6:00pm local time, by appointment
- Most first conversations happen on a call or on video, and you are welcome to meet at the office instead
- Nothing needs signing at a first meeting, and you keep the findings either way
Every office is by appointment only, including the headquarters. We do not take walk-ins. We also do not publish a promised booking turnaround, because the calendar shows real availability and a written promise would go stale the week after we made it.

We will run the checks above and walk you through what we find, including the parts that are already fine. Run from the San Francisco office, on a call, with nothing to sign. In-person meetings are available by appointment.
Straight answers.
Where is the nearest VIS Mountain office to SoMa?
Our Bay Area office is at 580 California Street, Suite 1200, immediately north across Market Street in the Financial District. Meetings are by appointment only.
Should we target SoMa or our sub-district?
Your sub-district, first and clearly. Yerba Buena, Mission Bay and Rincon Hill are all names people use and they carry far more specific intent.
SoMa is worth holding as a secondary term but on its own it covers a very large and very mixed area.
How do we prepare for event days?
Check hours against the published convention and ballpark calendars, refresh photographs, make access and directions obvious and ensure recent reviews are genuinely recent.
Event visitors decide from the map in minutes and rarely open a website.
Our lunch trade is office workers. What should we prioritise?
Accurate hours by day, entrance and suite detail in a district of large buildings, clear ordering and collection options and menus published as real pages.
The lunch decision window here is a few minutes on a phone within a short walk.
Is the downtown office recovery affecting us?
Weekday population varies noticeably by block and by building, which shows up directly in ground-floor trade.
We would rather measure your own enquiry and footfall pattern than generalise, because the variation within the district is large.
