Call tracking
Knowing which marketing made the phone ring.
For most local businesses the majority of enquiries arrive by phone, and by default every one of them is invisible to the marketing that produced it. Call tracking closes that gap, and done carelessly it breaks the listings consistency the rest of your local work depends on.

How does call tracking work and does it hurt SEO?
A script on your website swaps the displayed phone number based on how the visitor arrived, so a call from somebody who clicked a Google advertisement is recorded against that campaign and keyword. The call routes through to your real phone and the caller notices nothing.
It does not hurt local SEO when it is done correctly. The risk comes from publishing tracking numbers on your directory listings, which breaks the consistency of your business record across the web. With dynamic number insertion, only the website number changes and your real number stays primary everywhere else.
If a tracking number genuinely needs to be on a Google Business Profile, it should be added as a secondary number rather than replacing the primary one.
Why phone calls are the blind spot
Form submissions are easy to attribute because they happen on the website. Calls leave the website entirely, which means that without tracking, the channel producing the majority of enquiries in many local businesses is completely invisible to every optimisation decision.
The consequence is not just imprecise reporting. Every advertising platform optimises toward whatever you tell it counts as a conversion. If calls are not counted, the platform is learning from a partial and biased sample, and it will move budget toward whichever campaigns happen to produce forms.
That can be exactly the wrong direction. In many categories the highest intent people call rather than fill in a form, which means the campaigns producing the best customers look worst in the dashboard.
Fixing this is usually a larger improvement than anything done to the campaigns themselves, and it is a few days of work.
Where a call actually came from
Dynamic number insertion connects the ringing phone to the click, the keyword and the campaign behind it.
A pool of numbers is held and assigned to visitors based on how they arrived. The number is shown for the duration of their visit and for a period afterwards, then returned to the pool.
That means the attribution is only as good as the pool size relative to your traffic. A site with substantial traffic and a small pool will assign the same number to several visitors at once, which produces confident and incorrect attribution. It is worth asking anybody selling you this how large the pool is.
How to set it up without breaking anything
Most of the risk in call tracking is introduced during setup, and all of it is avoidable.
Leave your listings alone
Your real number stays primary on your Google Business Profile, on Apple, on Bing, on Facebook and on every directory. This is the rule that protects the consistency work your local visibility depends on, and it is the one most often broken.
Swap only the website number
Dynamic number insertion replaces the displayed number for website visitors based on their source. Everything else stays as it is. A person arriving from your Business Profile sees one number, a person arriving from a paid advertisement sees another.
- A pool large enough for your actual traffic volume
- The swap happening reliably, including for people who arrive on a deep page
- A fallback to the real number if the script fails, so nobody sees a broken page
Add a secondary number if you need profile level data
Google Business Profile allows additional numbers. A tracking number added as a secondary keeps attribution possible while leaving the primary, which is what most platforms read, unchanged.

Set a meaningful call duration threshold
A ten second call is a wrong number, not a lead. Counting every call as a conversion teaches the advertising platforms to find you more wrong numbers. Thirty to sixty seconds is a common starting point and should be set from your own data.
Connect it to the advertising platforms and the CRM
Calls passed back as conversions so campaigns can optimise toward them, and recorded in the CRM so the outcome of each one can eventually be connected back to the source.
Verify it against reality
Call the tracking numbers yourself from a phone, from different sources. Then reconcile the call log against the platform's reported conversions monthly, because this is something that breaks silently after site changes.
Steps one and four are where most of the harm and most of the waste live respectively.
Call recording, and the rules that govern it
Call recording is genuinely useful. It shows you how enquiries are actually handled, what people ask before booking, and which campaigns produce callers who were never going to buy. It is also legally constrained and the constraints differ by state.
Some states require only one party to consent to a recording, which in practice means your business consenting is sufficient. Others require all parties to consent, which means the caller has to be told and has to have the opportunity to object. Because callers can be in a different state from your business, the safe operating position is to announce the recording on every call regardless of where you are.

That announcement is not a formality. It has to be at the start, clear, and before anything worth recording is said.
In healthcare there is a further layer, because a recorded call may contain patient information, which affects where recordings may be stored, who may access them and how long they are retained. A call recording vendor handling that information needs the appropriate contractual terms in place.
We are not lawyers and will not advise you on which rules apply to your business. What we will do is configure announcements by default, set retention deliberately rather than indefinitely, and flag where your own counsel should look.
We do not publish a price for this piece of work on its own, because the right scope depends on what already exists. What is published is the bundle pricing: 2,400, 3,600 or 4,800 dollars a month depending on which channels are running. You can read the full breakdown on the pricing page, and you will get an exact number in writing before anything starts.
The mistakes that make call tracking harmful
Each of these turns a useful tool into a problem, and all of them are common.
- Tracking numbers published on your Google Business Profile as the primary number, or on directory listings, which breaks the consistency your local visibility depends on.
- A tracking number printed on vehicles, signage or stationery, which will eventually be recycled to another business when you stop paying for it.
- A number pool too small for your traffic, producing attribution that is confident and wrong.
- Every call counted as a conversion regardless of length, which teaches the ad platforms to find you more hang-ups.
- Recording without an announcement, which in several states is a legal problem rather than a policy one.

- Recordings kept indefinitely, particularly in healthcare, with no retention decision ever made.
- The script failing on some pages, so a proportion of visitors see no number or a broken one.
- Nobody reconciling the call log against the platform's reported conversions, so a break goes unnoticed for a quarter.
The signage item catches people out years later. A tracking number on a van is a number you are renting, and it stops being yours the day the subscription lapses.
The more valuable use, which most businesses ignore
Attribution is the reason call tracking gets bought. Listening to the calls is where the larger return usually is.
Ten recorded calls will tell you more about your marketing than a month of analytics. You hear what people actually ask before they commit, which tells you what your website failed to answer. You hear the objection that stops bookings. You hear whether your team is answering in a way that converts.

You also hear how many enquiries are not real, which is a genuinely useful and slightly uncomfortable number. In some categories a significant share of inbound calls are wrong numbers, sales calls or people looking for a service you do not provide, and knowing the real proportion changes how you read every cost per lead figure you have ever been shown.
And you hear the calls that were handled badly, which is not comfortable and is the single cheapest improvement available to most businesses. A campaign producing good enquiries that are poorly handled is not a campaign problem.
We include a periodic review of a sample of calls for exactly this reason, and it is usually the part of the report clients find most useful.
What each number tells you
You do not need a number for everything. This is the split that covers most local businesses.
| Item | Use a tracking number when | Keep the real number when |
|---|---|---|
| Website | Always, via dynamic insertion | Never needed |
| Google Business Profile | As a secondary, if you want profile call data | Always as the primary |
| Paid advertisements | Yes, including call extensions | Not applicable |
| Print, signage, vehicles | Only for a time limited campaign | Anything permanent |
| Directories and listings | Never | Always |
The bottom row is the one that matters most. A tracking number on a directory listing undoes the citation consistency work that local visibility depends on.
How this connects to the rest
Call tracking is one half of conversion tracking, and for many local businesses it is the more important half, because calls are the majority of enquiries.
It is what lets paid advertising optimise toward real customers. Without it, Google Ads and Meta are learning from form fills alone, which is a biased sample of your actual demand.
It intersects directly with local listings management, since the most common way listing consistency gets broken is a tracking number being published where it should not be.
And it feeds CRM implementation, because a call that is not recorded against a contact is a conversation that has to start from the beginning next time.
Listen to ten of your own calls.
If you already record them, listen to ten. If you do not, that is the first thing worth setting up, and the attribution is the smaller half of what you will learn.
Straight answers.
Does call tracking hurt my local SEO?
Not when it is done correctly. The risk is publishing tracking numbers on your listings, which breaks the consistency of your business record across the web.
Dynamic number insertion swaps only the website number. Your real number stays primary on your Google Business Profile and on every directory.
Can I put a tracking number on my Google Business Profile?
As a secondary number, yes. As the primary, no. The primary number is the one most platforms and aggregators read, and changing it propagates inconsistency across the web.
Do we have to tell callers we are recording?
Consent requirements differ by state, and some require all parties to consent. Because callers may be in a different state from your business, announcing the recording on every call is the safe operating position.
We configure the announcement by default rather than as an option, set retention deliberately rather than indefinitely, and flag where your own counsel should look.
How many numbers do we need?
Enough for the pool to cover your concurrent website visitors, plus one per paid channel. A pool too small produces confident and incorrect attribution.
Ask any provider what pool size they are proposing and how it relates to your actual traffic.
Should we put a tracking number on our van?
Only for a time limited campaign you are prepared to end. Tracking numbers are rented, and when the subscription lapses the number is recycled to somebody else.
Anything permanent should carry your real number.
What counts as a conversion from a call?
A call long enough to have been a real conversation, which is usually thirty to sixty seconds depending on your business, set from your own data rather than a default.
Counting every call teaches the advertising platforms to find you more wrong numbers, which is an expensive way to improve a dashboard.
