What local SEO actually is
Local SEO is the work that gets your business shown to people searching nearby — in Google’s Map Pack (the 3-business map block), Google Maps, and the organic results for terms like “plumber near me” or “dentist in Oak Brook.” It’s different from national SEO: proximity, your Google Business Profile, and reviews matter as much as your website.
Start with your Google Business Profile
Your Business Profile is the single biggest local ranking factor you control. Claim it, then complete every field:
- Exact business name, address, phone (your “NAP”) — matched everywhere online
- Correct primary category (and relevant secondary categories)
- Hours, service areas, services, and real photos
- Products/services with descriptions and prices where it makes sense
Keep your NAP consistent
Name, Address, and Phone should be identical across your website, Business Profile, and every directory (Yelp, Apple Maps, industry listings). Inconsistent NAP confuses search engines and dilutes your ranking signals.
Earn reviews — steadily and honestly
Reviews influence both rankings and whether someone calls you. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct link, and respond to all reviews — positive and negative — professionally. Never buy fake reviews; platforms detect and penalize them.
Build local pages that deserve to rank
If you serve multiple areas, build a genuinely useful page per location — with real local detail, not the same text with the city swapped. Add local landmarks, service-area specifics, and answers to questions local customers actually ask.
Track what matters
Watch Map Pack rankings, Business Profile calls and direction requests, and form/phone conversions — not vanity metrics. Local SEO compounds: expect movement over weeks and months, not days. Anyone promising instant #1 rankings is overselling.
