Contra Costa County, California

Marketing for Richmond businesses

An industrial and port city on the north-east bay shore, with a historic village at one end, a hilltop retail district at the other, and a business base where the local search fundamentals are still widely available.

Platforms this work keeps in sync: Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp, Nextdoor, Foursquare, Tripadvisor and Better Business Bureau.

In short

Is Richmond, California the same as San Francisco's Richmond District?

No. Richmond is a separate city in Contra Costa County on the north-east shore of San Francisco Bay, while the Richmond District is a neighbourhood inside the city of San Francisco.

The two are frequently confused in directories and in search, which is a real and correctable source of inconsistent records for businesses in either place.

VIS Mountain serves Richmond from its San Francisco office at 580 California Street. There is no VIS Mountain address in Richmond.

A port city on the north-east shore.

Richmond sits in Contra Costa County on the north-eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, with El Cerrito and Berkeley to the south, San Pablo and Pinole to the north and the Richmond San Rafael Bridge running west to Marin County. Interstate 80 and Interstate 580 both serve the city.

Point Richmond, at the south-western end, is a small historic village with its own walkable commercial centre and a distinct identity. Hilltop, in the north, is a retail district around the mall and the highway interchange. Macdonald Avenue runs through the central part of the city as the historic main street.

The Chevron Richmond Refinery occupies a very large site on the northern shoreline and the Port of Richmond operates on the bay. BART terminates at Richmond station, which also serves Amtrak. From our San Francisco office at 580 California Street the BART ride north is direct.

Search behaviour

A name collision, and a market where the basics are still available.

The Richmond name collision with San Francisco's Richmond District is a real operational problem. Directories and data sources mix them up, searches return results from both, and a business in either place can end up with confused records. Being explicit about the city and county in every record is the practical fix.

Beyond that, this is a market where the fundamentals still move positions. Unclaimed profiles, wrong hours, generic categories and absent reviews are common enough across categories that careful housekeeping produces genuine movement, which is no longer true in much of the inner Bay Area.

Point Richmond and Hilltop are at opposite ends of the city and compete against completely different sets of businesses.

Evidence

How people actually run a local search.

Before arguing about tactics, it is worth knowing what the behaviour looks like. BrightLocal's 2026 consumer search research found the following. It is vendor research, so we name it rather than calling it fact.

84%of US consumers searched for a local business in the past three months
52%started their most recent local search on Google
71%use Google Search at some point during a local search

None of that is specific to Richmond. What is specific to Richmond is who you are competing with once the search runs, which is the rest of this page.

Levers

Four things move local visibility. Everything else is detail.

The name collision with San Francisco's Richmond District is a genuine operational problem and a correctable one. These are the four we work on, in roughly this order of leverage.

Who trades here

Refining and port industry, independent retail and a growing services base.

Heavy industry is the city's historic and still substantial base: refining, port operations, logistics, manufacturing and the specialist contractors, equipment suppliers and industrial services that support them. These sell on capability and contract rather than through a map.

The independent retail and service economy is spread along Macdonald Avenue, San Pablo Avenue and the neighbourhood centres: restaurants and takeaways, groceries and markets, auto repair, salons and barbers, tax and insurance services, clinics and dental practices. A meaningful share of this trade happens in Spanish.

Point Richmond supports a small walkable cluster of restaurants, cafes and independent shops with a genuinely village character, and Hilltop carries larger-format retail. A substantial trades and home services base works across the north-east bay from Richmond bases.

Scoping

How we decide what a business actually needs.

We do not have a package that everyone gets. This is the sequence we work through before quoting anything for a business in Richmond.

  1. Find out who your last fifty customers were and how they found you

If you cannot answer that, the first job is tracking rather than marketing. Everything after this step is a guess until that question has an answer.

  2. Work out whether your buyers search locally at all

A practice, a restaurant or a contractor is a local search business. A manufacturer, a distributor or a firm selling regionally often is not, and we will tell you that rather than selling a local programme into a market with no local demand.

  3. Look at what the competitive set has actually done

In some markets every competitor has a claimed profile, real reviews and a working site. In others half of them have none of those. The honest scope varies by several multiples between those two situations.

See the remaining steps: How we decide what a business actually needs.2 more stepsHide the remaining steps: How we decide what a business actually needs.
  1. Separate the one-off fixes from the ongoing work

Citation cleanup, a category correction and a tracking setup are jobs with an end. Reviews, content and monitoring are not. Quoting them as one number hides which is which.

  2. Say what we would not bother with

Every proposal we write includes the things we think are not worth doing for that business yet. It is the fastest way to tell whether a scope has been thought about.

That process sometimes ends with us quoting a small piece of work instead of a retainer. That is a legitimate outcome and it happens more often than you would expect.

Surfaces

Three places people look, and they do not behave the same.

Search is no longer one result page. In several categories here the fundamentals still move positions in a way they no longer do in the inner Bay Area. These three surfaces reward different things, which is why a business can own one and be invisible on the others.

Who covers Richmond, and how.

Richmond is a service area, not an office location. The work is run from the VIS Mountain San Francisco office, which is the nearest of our seven, and there is no VIS Mountain address in Richmond. Every page on this site that shows a street address shows an office we actually have.

  • The San Francisco office runs the work, and its team is who you would deal with
  • Direct line for that office: (424) 246-9766
  • Support and service are available 24 hours virtually, which is what our published availability describes
  • In-person meetings run 8:00am to 6:00pm local time, by appointment
  • Most first conversations happen on a call or on video, and you are welcome to meet at the office instead
  • Nothing needs signing at a first meeting, and you keep the findings either way

Every office is by appointment only, including the headquarters. We do not take walk-ins. We also do not publish a promised booking turnaround, because the calendar shows real availability and a written promise would go stale the week after we made it.

Start with the cheap fixes.

Most Richmond businesses have two or three corrections worth more than a month of new work. The San Francisco office will find them and tell you what they are. Meetings are by appointment, in person or on a call.

Questions

Straight answers.

Does VIS Mountain have an office in Richmond?

No. Our Bay Area office is at 580 California Street, Suite 1200, San Francisco. We serve Richmond from there, by appointment only.

How do we avoid being confused with the Richmond District?

Be explicit about city and county in every record and in your page content, and make sure your structured data states the correct address components.

It will not eliminate every confused search, but it removes the part you control and it is worth doing once properly.

Are the basics really still available here?

In many categories, yes. Unclaimed profiles, wrong hours and absent reviews are common enough that doing the fundamentals properly produces real movement.

We check the actual competitive set before quoting, because it often means a smaller scope is enough.

Should our site be in Spanish as well as English?

If a meaningful share of your customers search in Spanish, yes, with real translated content rather than a browser widget.

Reviews in Spanish should be answered in Spanish by someone who read them.

We supply into the refinery and the port. Does local search help?

Barely, for winning contracts, and we would rather say so. Those buyers run formal procurement.

What helps is a site that states capabilities, certifications, safety record and past performance clearly enough to be shortlisted.
