YouTube ads
Video placement against intent, not just views.
YouTube reaches more United States adults than any other platform, and it is still the wrong first channel for most local businesses. The value depends almost entirely on whether you have usable footage and a purchase people think about before making.

Do YouTube ads work for local businesses?
Sometimes, and rarely as a first channel. YouTube works when the purchase is considered rather than urgent, when seeing something explained or demonstrated genuinely changes a person's mind, and when you already have footage worth running. Pew Research Center measures YouTube use at 84% of United States adults, so the reach is not the constraint.
It works badly for emergency services, for businesses with no usable video, and for anyone expecting the cost per enquiry to resemble a search campaign. Video advertising builds familiarity and consideration, which convert later and are harder to attribute.
The most useful application for most local businesses is not cold reach at all. It is showing video to people who already visited your website or engaged with you elsewhere.
What video advertising actually does
Search advertising catches a decision that has already been made. Video advertising participates in the decision before it happens. Those produce very different numbers and judging one by the other's standards is why most local YouTube campaigns get switched off too early.
A video ad rarely produces an immediate enquiry. What it produces is familiarity, understanding of what you do, and a reason to consider you when the need arrives. Some of that shows up later as a branded search or a direct visit with no traceable link to the campaign.
That is a genuine measurement problem rather than an excuse, and it should change how much you are willing to spend. A business that cannot tolerate a channel it cannot cleanly attribute should not run video, and we would rather say so than take the budget.
Where video does produce measurable enquiries is in retargeting. Somebody who visited your site last week and then sees a sixty second explanation from the person who would treat them is a meaningfully different prospect from a cold viewer.
The reach is not the question
Pew Research Center measures platform use among United States adults using address-based sampling rather than an online panel.

Everyone is on YouTube, which means reach is never the constraint. The constraints are whether you have footage worth showing and whether your purchase is one that benefits from being explained.
How a campaign is actually built
The sequence here is unusual because the creative constraint comes before every other decision.
Establish whether you have footage
This is the gate. We edit the footage you have; we do not run a production crew. If nothing usable exists, the honest first step is capturing some, which is a separate conversation and sometimes a reason to run a different channel instead.
Decide what the video has to achieve
Explaining a procedure, introducing the person who does the work, showing a result, or answering the objection that stops people booking. A video trying to do all four does none of them. One job per video.
Build for the first three seconds
Skippable formats give you a few seconds before most viewers decide. The opening has to establish relevance immediately, usually by naming the problem or the place. Logos and slow build-ups waste the only attention you are guaranteed.
- Relevance stated in the opening seconds, not held back
- Readable with the sound off, because many views are muted
- Vertical and landscape versions, because placements differ

Target by intent where possible
Beyond demographics and location, campaigns can target people who have recently searched for related terms, people watching relevant content, and custom audiences built from your own site visitors and customer lists. Intent based targeting is the difference between video advertising and television.
Start with retargeting, expand outward
The most efficient spend is showing video to people who already know you exist. Once that is working and measurable, widening to cold audiences becomes a reasoned decision rather than a guess.
Measure over a longer window
Attribution windows that make sense for search do not make sense here. Branded search volume, direct traffic and total enquiry volume with the channel on and off tell you more than the platform's conversion column.
Expect six to twelve weeks before a fair read, and expect some of the value to be visible only in aggregate.
What the formats actually do
Format choice follows from the job, not the other way round.
| Item | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Skippable in-stream | Plays before or during a video, skippable after a few seconds | Explaining something to a considered audience |
| Non-skippable | Short, must be watched | A single simple message, guaranteed delivery |
| In-feed | Appears in search and suggested results | Capturing people already looking for related content |
| Shorts | Vertical, short form | Reach with a younger audience, if you can produce volume |
For local businesses, skippable in-stream and in-feed do most of the useful work. Non-skippable buys attention you may not deserve yet.
When YouTube is the wrong answer
We would rather rule this out on a call than spend three months proving it.
- You have no usable footage and no way to capture any. This is the most common blocker and there is no way around it.
- Your service is an emergency. Nobody watches a video while their basement floods.
- You need attributable enquiries this month. Video is a consideration channel and behaves like one.
- Your budget is small enough that it would be better spent on search, where the intent already exists.
- Your video is a montage with music and a logo. It looks like an advertisement, which is exactly what people skip.

- Nobody has set up audience lists, so every impression goes to someone who has never heard of you.
- You are being sold view counts and completion rates as the outcome. Neither is a business result.
- The video is over two minutes and the point arrives at ninety seconds.
If three or more of these apply, the honest recommendation is to spend the budget somewhere else and revisit when you have footage.
How to measure something that works indirectly
View count is a vanity metric. Completion rate tells you whether the creative held attention, which is useful for deciding what to make next and is not a business outcome.
The measures worth watching are branded search volume over time, which is the cleanest available proxy for growing awareness; direct traffic; total enquiry volume compared across periods with the channel running and paused; and view-through activity, meaning people who saw the video and later converted without clicking it.

View-through conversions deserve scepticism rather than dismissal. They are real in the sense that the exposure happened, and they are easy to over-credit. We report them separately from click conversions rather than blending them into one number that flatters the channel.
The most honest test available to a local business is a simple one: run it for a quarter, pause it for a quarter, and look at total enquiries. It is crude and it is more reliable than most attribution.
We do not publish a price for this piece of work on its own, because the right scope depends on what already exists. What is published is the bundle pricing: 2,400, 3,600 or 4,800 dollars a month depending on which channels are running. You can read the full breakdown on the pricing page, and you will get an exact number in writing before anything starts.
Where it genuinely works
Considered medical and dental procedures, where seeing the clinician explain what happens removes real anxiety. This is the category where video most reliably changes a decision, and it is also where the compliance constraints are tightest.
Home improvement and remodelling, where the transformation is visual and the decision takes weeks. Footage of completed work is inherently persuasive and most contractors already have it on their phones.
Professional services where trust in an individual is the purchase. A lawyer or financial adviser explaining something clearly for ninety seconds does more than any amount of written copy.
Categories where it rarely works: commodity services chosen on price, emergency response, and anything where the customer already knows exactly what they want and is simply choosing who answers first.
In regulated categories the platform rules and the Federal Trade Commission's substantiation requirements both apply, and outcome claims in a video are no more defensible than outcome claims in text.
How this connects to the rest
YouTube is one of eight channels under paid advertising, and it belongs after search advertising is working rather than before it.
It depends on video editing, which is where the footage you capture becomes something worth running. We edit what you shoot rather than shooting it for you, and that constraint shapes what is realistic.
Retargeting is where video usually earns its place, which means it needs enough website traffic to build audiences from, which in turn usually means search work is already running.
It reinforces branding by putting a face and a voice to the name, and the branded search it generates is picked up by SEO and GEO work rather than by the video campaign itself.
Bring us your footage and we will tell you if it is enough.
The honest gate on this channel is whether you have usable video. Show us what you have and we will say whether it is worth running or whether the budget belongs elsewhere.
Straight answers.
Do you produce the video?
We edit. VIS Mountain does not run a production crew and does not shoot footage, and we would rather be clear about that than imply otherwise.
What we can do is tell you exactly what to capture, then turn what you shoot into something worth running.
How long should a YouTube ad be?
Long enough to make one point and no longer. For most local businesses that is fifteen to sixty seconds, with the relevance established in the first three.
Longer videos can work for genuinely complex, considered purchases, but only if the opening earns the time.
How much does it cost?
Pricing is by view or by action depending on the format, and the rate varies by targeting and competition. We will not quote you a cost per view we cannot source.
The more useful planning number is what a customer is worth to you, because that decides how much awareness you can afford to buy.
Can I target people in my city only?
Yes, and location targeting should be set to people in your area rather than people interested in it, which is the setting that quietly wastes budget on most campaigns.
Beyond location, targeting by recent search behaviour and by your own website audiences is what makes this different from television.
How do I know if it worked?
Over a longer window than search and with less precision. Branded search, direct traffic and total enquiry volume compared with the channel on and off are more reliable than the platform's conversion column.
If you need clean attribution on every enquiry, this is not the right channel for you and we will say so.
